Freeforms

Freeforms, are also known as Live Action Roleplays (LARPs), Live RolePlay (LRP) or Parlour LaRP games. They typically run for 12 to 30 players in a single session, and focus on the interaction between the characters.

Scenes are acted out, but combat and stunts are described only, and will be resolved through shared description rather than physical effort.

Pre-written characters are normally provided as part of the game, and it's always an advantage to pre-register for them if you're really keen to play your favourite!

Costuming is optional but encouraged.

New designers are highlighted:

Baron Munchausen, by Alicia Cameron

It has been too long, dear friends, since last we gathered to regale each other with tales of adventure and news from afar. Why, 'twas not until last month that I learned of our own dear Baron Munchausen's grand exploits in constructing a dirigible of moonstone and silk to harvest the century ice in the farthest depths of Greenland, and that he had accomplished such a thing a whole four years ago! As such, my near and far and dearest ladies, gentlemen, and those of neither and both persuasions, I do most cordially invite you all to return to these hallowed halls and partake once more in rounds of revelry and story. One session of impeccable manners and absolutely definitely true storytelling. Note: This is an Enlightenment-era fantasy game where you take on a persona of your own making and tell impromptu stories based on the random prompts given to you. Low stakes, low stress, no prior knowledge required.

Constructing Peace, by Ingrid Bean and David James, Pixie Bea, Sandra d'Argeavel

Constructing Peace

This is a game about loss, anger, and grief. This is a game about how you justify your actions and pay restitution for the harm that you caused. But this is also a game about restoring self, restoring trust, restoring community: about reconciliation.

The Valley was once a peaceful place: lush fields, thick forests, clear-running streams. The people of the Valley were happy: accepted for who they are, they loved whom they chose.

Then the Regime came: with their muskets, and their cannons, and their need for conquest. For 18 years they occupied the Valley, subjugating its people. Throughout those years the Resistance fought back, with little lasting result until they blew up the dam and flooded the town.

Twelve months after the Regime was cleansed from the Valley, the survivors are trying to rebuild. But what does home look like when it's built on the remains of destruction? And what does home feel like after everything you did to reclaim it? How do you use what is left to construct peace?

Constructing Peace is a freeform for 15 players about the aftermath of genocide and how you move forward.

CN: This game references post-natal depression, death of children, cultural persecution, transphobia, homophobia, sexual assault, terrorism and genocide. We commit to explore these issues in a safe environment with sensitivity and supportiveness. We will be using the OK Check-in safety mechanic to ensure the safety of all participants.

Constructing Peace follows on from Seeking Refuge (Pheno 2024) and Reclaiming Home (Pheno 2025) with characters both familiar and new, but you can enjoy this game without having played either of the previous games.

Creeping Line, by Sean Allsop

The UEFS Townsville and her sister ship, the UEFS Cairns, were supposed to usher in a new era of prosperity for humanity. Equipped with new jump drive technology designed to cut year-long travel times down to seconds, they would revolutionize interstellar logistics for humanity.

That was the hope until the Townsville went dark on her maiden voyage to Earth's farthest colony, disappearing without a trace. The Cairns was hastily re-crewed with a rescue team including the designer of the jump drive, Doctor Mayfield, departing within a week. She too vanished without a trace.

Now, three years after both ships disappeared, the Cairns has returned, dozens of light years away from her original destination. Seeing a chance to finally work out what went wrong and recover at least one wildly expensive vessel, Earth has sent the crew of the UEFS Brisbane, a more conventional rescue ship, to recover the Cairns.

As the crew of the Brisbane awake from a disturbed cryo-sleep, the crew of the Cairns desperately continue their work, trying to make sense of scanner readings that can't be real and a series of system failures that threaten the ship and her crew. But if both crews can't work out what happened to the Townsville, then nobody is going home.

Creeping Line is a sci-fi horror freeform for 13 players embodying the crews of the Cairns and the Brisbane.

Setting/System: This is a freeform set in a homebrew sci-fi universe that draws heavily from films such as Alien, Event Horizon and The Relic for both aesthetic and plot.

Seriousness: 4 - This is a horror game about rescue crews with a ticking clock. Bleak first responder (medic/firefighter) style humour is expected and encouraged.

Movie Rating: MA - horror movie violence, body horror, themes of isolation, grief, despair and some psychological horror.

For the Greater Glory of Cain, by Jason Cebalo

The Sabbat: a group of violent religious fanatics or the heroes and freedom fighters of the vampire world? Maybe they're both. The time has come. The Sabbat, in their long battle for the freedom of vampire kind against the antediluvians, are ready to strike an important blow against the hated Camarilla. The time has come to lay siege to Sydney. (Praise Cain!)

Sabbat vampires from around Australia will be gathering in Newcastle to plan their assault. Before the battle, however, comes a party.

Of course, when the Sabbat gather to party their will necessarily be some politics. Particularly, the archbishop of Newcastle has some enemies within the sect who would like to take his title. There are also rumours of traitors within the sect and the ever-vigilant inquisition suspects the influence of infernalists. Then there's the question of who the new Archbishop of Sydney will be.

So, the Sabbat gether to party and to plan, who will emerge on top?

For the Greater Glory of Cain is a freeform for sixteen players. It will be loosely based on Vampire: the Masquerade's 20th Anniversary Edition but will be systemless. Knowledge of the setting will be helpful but by no means essential and new players are very welcome.

March of Balor, by Stephen Justice

Balor of the Evil Eye marches across the land once more and will smite all who stand in his way.

The brave and the weary gather to keep watch at the pass, hoping his army goes another way, but prepared to take a stand if he does not. They cannot hope to stop his army if it turns their way, but maybe they can buy their loved ones enough time to make a difference.

You are gathered around a fire with the other scouts at the pass. Some of them you know well and some you have only met briefly when travelling between the tribes. You can see it in their eyes, the same fear in yours that you will be forced to lay down your life, but you can also see the same determination to save your loved ones.

To keep your minds off of matters, you all agree to take turns telling stories. Of your exploits, or of those you care about. You will need to trust each other's bravery if you are to hold the line long enough to make a different. Maybe if you're lucky, your stories will live on after you die, and you will not be forgotten.

Outwardly you show the bravery of your tribe, yet you cannot but hope you are one of the runners chosen to warn the tribes. Your dear friends are here among the scouts though, and you will be using your vote to see their return over your own.

More than anything you hope it will not come to pass, but each night the lights on the horizon grow brighter.

March of Balor is a game of stories told of past deeds, of deeply forged bonds, and finally of loss. It is not a story of a heroic last stand, but of people desperate to save the ones they love and for people to remember them after they are gone.

Star Trek: Regenerations, by Adrian Overbury

"Doctor's Log: Stardate, umm, two!"

"Well, in this room, perhaps, Captain. Step outside and who can tell? Anyway, whose log is this, yours or mine?"

"It's supposed to be mine, so if you don't mind...Begin Captain's Log: Stardate 46264.2, at least within the confines of the Enterprise's ready room. The Enterprise has encountered an anomaly unlike anything we have seen before. While proceeding at warp four to the Cintak Cluster to assist in the mediation efforts there, the Enterprise was drawn into a sort of...vortex in space, and collided with a mysterious blue box that was careening wildly. According to one of the inhabitants of the box, an apparently human person who is known only by the title of "Doctor", it is a vessel called a TARDIS. The collision has had some rather bizarre effects on both vessels, and I have yet to make contact with the rest of my crew to ascertain overall ship status. More to follow. End log."
